702 in an important diverse space that must be protected - Stephen Grootes

When it comes to how we consume media, there seems to be a disconnect. At least that is what 702 host Stephen Grootes perceives.

For Grootes, South Africans differ according to many factors, creating a bubble that is difficult to penetrate through conversation. These include income, area and preferred news sources.

Over time the media that South Africans consume has moved apart. And that means when we try to speak to each other there is a big risk that we miss each other.

Stephen Grootes , 702 Host

For example, there is no point in me writing a big opinion piece in Business Day to change your mind, if you are never going to read Business Day. And it's no use, some one using The New Age to change my mind.

Stephen Grootes , 702 Host

But for Grootes, 702 is different. People from all walks of life listen to the station, creating a good space for connection through communication.

Its not that everyone listens to 702. The power is that different people from different areas and all walks of life from Orlando and Bryanston and Ferry Glen Soshanguve - all listen to us. That's the most precious thing about 702.

Stephen Grootes , 702 Host

For Grootes, this is nearly unique in the country. It is the reason why so many people get upset when the station gets it wrong, as they should.

It is the reason the station learns and grows from the listeners and it is the reason it is a space that must be protected, he says.
