Going away? Tips on ensuring pet safety these holidays

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has encouraged residents to take care in ensuring their pets are safe over the holidays.

The festive season is the busiest time of the year for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA as pet-owners travel and embark on adventures.

Cape of Good Hope SPCA's Belinda Abrahams says the organisation is inundated with stray animals, abandoned animals and pets that have been surrendered.

Abrahams shares advice for pet-owners:

  • find a reputable boarding facility for your pet
  • alternatively, make sure there is a responsible person to look after them
  • never leave your pet without someone to care for them
  • pets must always have fresh, clean water
  • ensure that there is shelter for them when it is hot

If you have not put your animal into a reputable boarding facility, it is essential that you have let them in the hands of a responsible person.

Belinda Abrahams, Cape of Good Hope SPCA spokesperson

Call on 083 3261604 after hours or on 0217004158/9 during office hours with any complaints of animal neglect in Cape Town.

Donations of dry cat and dog food are also welcome.
