On Christmas Eve, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba had a message for Jacob Zuma and the newly elected ANC top 6 candidates. The Archbishop made his political views clear when he said that Zuma must step down as he called on the new ANC leadership to act quickly in replacing Zuma as head of state.
Political Analyst, Professor Sipho Seepe talks about the risk of Archbishop Thabo Makgoba’s message and the implications it could cause.
Professor Seepe says that the Archbishop has every right to express his political views. He adds that the only concern people have raised, is that this may defile his position as Archbishop.
The Archbishop has placed his office into controversy says Professor Seepe. He adds that other Anglican’s are even calling for him to go.
Professor Seepe says that the ANC has gone into a Conference, where there was clear slated divisions. What the ANC tried to do was find a common cause to heal these divisions he adds.
After the ANC has gone through all this trauma, here you have an Archbishop who comes with a sermon, that his own priests are saying was full of hate says Professor Seepe. He adds that when you become embedded in the media controversy and public discourse, you are undermining that office.
Within the ANC, you have Anglican’s who belong to both side so where do they go for spiritual healing asks Seepe?
