ANC must ensure Zuma's recall not a repeat of Mbeki's - analyst

The ANC has to be more tactful with recalling President Jacob Zuma than it was with Thabo Mbeki, says political analyst Professor Tinyiko Maluleke.

This comes amid claims that Zuma has reportedly been handed a deadline to step down as the country’s leader.

Maluleke says the ANC will have to be more careful and considerate about their procedure to recall a president.

I think the ANC will need to be more careful given their experience with the recall of the previous president, Thabo Mbeki.

How the ANC does this will have to be a lot more tidier than they did it with Mbeki.

He says while he is not convinced about the rumoured deadline, calls for Zuma to go are mounting.

According to Maluleke, recalling Zuma without tact threatens to weaken the ANC and embolden opposition parties.

Meanwhile, ANC NEC member Ronald Lamola says he cannot comment on the NEC's internal discussions about Zuma's fate.

It's clear from the conference that the [ANC] membership want a breathe of fresh air, a new lease of life for the ANC.

They also want the ANC to take decisions and hold the executive to account.

Lamola says the NEC will not hesitate to implement the resolutions of the ANC's December national elective conference, to restore the integrity of the party.
