There's no shame in taking a break from booze, says sobriety advocate

Going public about your sobriety helps you stay on track, explains advocate Janet Gourand.

Gourand is a recovering alcoholic and the founder of World Without Wine, a sobriety community which provides support and workshops.

She explains that there is no shame in taking a break from alcohol and its harmful effects.

Opening up about your personal journey of quitting booze also means that other people are able to hold you accountable.

Gourand coaches and facilitates recovery and wellness classes and has encouraged people to participate in the Dry January challenge and quit alcohol for the month.

She advises that alcohol has an impact on sleep and causes prolonged fatigue, among other side effects.

There's a huge benefit from giving your body a break. Let's face it, alcohol is an addictive poison.
