5 people arrested in Herman Mashaba's R1 billion electricity collection blitz

You may have seen or heard that the City of Johannesburg, JMPD, as well as the executive mayor, Herman Mashaba are plannng to embark on a revenue collection blitz.

EWN Reporter Katleho Sekhotho was present when the mayor kicked off his ambitious plan.

She joined Gugu Mhlungu, standing in for Bongani Bingwa, in studio to talk about how the collection blitz unfolded in Yeoville on Monday.

Sekhotho says that they travelled with the mayor from various businesses to apartment buildings. She adds that the mayor went to each and every building, demanding documents to show the electricity bill has been paid.

Five people in total were arrested, says Sekhotho, adding that she witnessed people being put into police vans.

This is the mayor's project in trying to get down to the buildings that aren’t paying for electricity.

Sekhotho says that there was a building that the mayor described as having an electricity box, that was no longer even in the market.

The mayor highlighted how people have not been paying their electricity bills since 2014.
