Claims of kickbacks paid to schools implicated in uniform price fixing

The Competition Commission says its probe into school uniform price fixing has reached an advanced stage and will be concluded in the coming weeks.

In 2016, the Commission launched a probe into the high cost of uniforms following complaints about exclusive contracts between schools and some suppliers.

The Commission is looking to have these scrapped.

Asked if any school principals have received kickbacks in the process, the Commission's Sipho Ngwema said two complaints were received over possible criminal activity.

That was not the focus of our investigation. Information to that effect was passed on to law enforcement agencies, like the police. Those are taking their own process in terms of investigation. We focus mainly on the anti-competitive behavior, but we did receive one or two complaints that there was possibly some criminality involved.

Sipho Ngwema, Communications manager at the Competition Commission

We have discovered that more than 30% of schools indeed are still involved in anti-competitive behavior. In fact, there is one contract that dates back to 1974.
