Gumtree Auto ZA's Jeff Osborne and Cars.co.za's Ciro De Siena offer their expert tips when buying a budget car for a newbie.

Two motoring experts have shared tips for buying a young or new driver a budget car.

Jeff Osborne, head of automotive for Gumtree SA, says affordability and vehicle safety are the most important factors when buying a first-time car.

He suggests that buyers always check safety features and road-worthiness of pre-owned vehicles.

Osborne emphasises the importance of an authentic service record when buying any car.

It's far better to have entry level vehicle without bells and whistles. There's less to go wrong and its less attractive in terms of security and theft perspective.

If there is no service book available, simply walk away.

Motoring journo Ciro De Siena says electronic stability control (ESC) is one of the most vital vehicle safety features.

  • Suzuki Ignis 1.2 GL
  • Toyota Etios 1.5 Sprint hatch
