[LISTEN] ANC's proposed land expropriation explained

In December, the African National Congress (ANC) announced it will move to change the Constitution, with some amendment to section 25, to allow for the expropriation of land without compensation.

There is little detail about how this will be achieved, as Section 25 refers not only to land alone but to all property.

The Institute of Race Relations explains.

It is very important to bear in mind that this is not just about land. The property clause, as unambiguous as it is, deals with all property.

Terrence Corrigan, Policy Fellow at the SA Institute of Race Relations

When one talks about amending the Constitution, one is almost certainly going to talk about degrading the entire property rights ecosystem, not simply the hold over land and certainly not only over the agricultural land holding which seems to be the way this is being discussed and presented.

Terrence Corrigan, Policy Fellow at the SA Institute of Race Relations
