Seven bodies of illegal miners dumped in open veld after being shot

Gauteng Saps spokesperson, Lungelo Dlamini, confirmed that seven bodies of suspected illegal miners were found in a veld near a mineshaft in Benoni, Johannesburg on Sunday.

He says they were alerted by a member of the community of the decomposing bodies that had bullet wounds in the upper bodies.

We suspect that the bodies were dumped in the area and we don't know where they were killed.

Lungelo Dlamini, Gauteng Saps spokesperson

Our investigation will look at the possibility that they might have been killed by other illegal miners.

Dlamini says it is the responsibility of the mines to ensure that the disused mineshafts are properly closed and leave no room for illegal mining.

He says the police have arrested some members of the gang believed to be involved in illegal mining through the information received from Crime Intelligence.
