Schweppes leaves a bad taste in consumers mouth with their branding mix-up

On Stephen’s first day as #AfternoonDrive host, he addresses a plethora of issues currently happening in South Africa. Issues including the Afrikaans high school and their language policy, political violence and investigations, as well as illegal mining and how to combat it.

Stephan touched on matters of the heart too. The #AfternoonDrive host talked about a personal experience he had with Schweppes new packaging, which could have potentially triggered some feeling of betrayal amongst consumers.

Due to Schweppes rebranding of their soda and tonic water, many consumers ended up with a bad taste in their mouth as their gin and tonic became a gin and soda.

Grootes says that the one thing South Africans may be thinking about as they come from the festive season, is around Schweppes confusing branding.

You would have a gin and tonic, and you’d find hold on, that’s not tonic water I’ve put in there, that’s soda water because the bottles look exactly the same.

Stephen Grootes, 702 presenter

Grootes adds that on twitter, listeners tweeted about their experiences with the mix-up.
