The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) is expected to execute a preservation order against consulting firm McKinsey and Gupta-linked Trillian to freeze assets worth an estimated R1.6-billion.
The unit obtained the order at the High Court in Pretoria last month.
South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) laid criminal charges against Trillian and its shareholders in October, and has worked closely with the AFU.
Trillian is accused of unduly benefiting nearly R600-million while McKinsey allegedly pocketed more than a billion rand through corruption.
Bloomberg News journalist Sam Mkokeli says questions remain over the AFU's timing.
The one question I have is if the AFU got the order to preserve the assets in December, what took them so long?— Sam Mkokeli, Bloomberg News journalist
Did they consider the ANC's conference, did somebody very senior in the NPA try to block the move to protect this very politically connected family [Gupta]— Sam Mkokeli, Bloomberg News journalist
