Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters chats to Stephen Grootes about her experience as Miss Universe so far, and what the title means to her.

Nel-Peters says that she returned home on Wednesday morning and it’s been a wonderful experience to be back and engage with the South African people.

It’s been two months now and I’ve had quite a few trips abroad, says Nel-Peters. She adds that she had to adjust to being called Miss Universe for the first two weeks.

Nel-Peters says that being Miss Universe constitutes more than wearing beautiful dresses and getting your make up done. She adds that it’s about having a platform to make a meaningful contribution to the world.

I started a campaign called ‘Unbreakable’ after I experienced a hijack.

Nel-Peters says that her campaign is geared towards empowering women in dealing with difficult situations like abuse and violence. She adds that she was surprised to see how many women she could reach in South Africa alone.
