Icasa to probe alleged Multichoice kickbacks to SABC and ANN7

Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) will be investigating Multichoice over allegations of payments made to the South African Broadcast Corporation (SABC) and Gupta linked ANN7.

Last year the Democratic Alliance published minutes of the SABC board meeting which revealed that MultiChoice sought to pay the public broadcaster R100 million for its 24-hour news channel in exchange for its political influence over digital migration.

This is alongside allegations that the company paid Gupta-owned ANN7 millions of rand in exchange for similar influence over government's position on set-top boxes.

Icasa's Paseka Maleka says the probe may be concluded timeously.

We have issued a letter to the DA to say we have looked into their letter. We are going to engage Multichoice on this matter and send the the complaint from the DA to Multichoice for Multichoice to respond.

Paseka Maleka, Icasa spokesperson

Their [DA] letter has got some attachments, so we said to them they must tell us if they want us to engage Multichoice with those annexures - or maybe they want some kind of confidentiality on those issues. So they have until the 31st of January to give us that information.

Paseka Maleka, Icasa spokesperson

We will investigate the matter further. This matter, I don't think it should take long. It will depend.
