[LISTEN] 955 trapped Sibanye Gold miners rescued

Sibanye-Stillwater has confirmed that 955 mine workers trapped at it's Beatrix mine in the Free State have been rescued.

The group were trapped underground for nearly 30 hours because of a power outage caused by a severe storm.

The power was restored in the early hours of Friday morning.

Sibanye Gold spokesperson James Wellsted says while back up generators in two of the shafts helped bring some of the miners to the surface, there were technical issues with the other.

At one of the shafts there was due to the power surge, a problem with some of the software between the generator and the winder and that was the issue we had.

Of course we will look at it and try and see where we can learn from it but as I say, there was a very unusual occurrence and not necessarily a operational issue.
