The portrayal of motherhood in the media can be problematic says parenting coach

In the parenting feature, parenting coach Mia Von Scha chats about the stressful nature of motherhood, and how the media influences our views on parenting.

Von Scha says that motherhood can be incredibly stressful. She adds that you have to tackle issues like grasping the reality that parenting is not all it's cracked up to be.

I can remember being in that position, and the absolute terror of driving home from the hospital and there’s this alien in your car but you don’t know what it wants.

From the media and other people - we get this idea that these instincts are going to take over and we are going to know what that different cry means.

Von Scha says that as mothers, we tend to judge ourselves by these unrealistic standards. She adds that there are those who get it, but the vast majority of us don’t.

This plants the seeds of depression because we start comparing this fantasy of motherhood in our minds, to the actual reality of what it is says Von Scha
