The Science Of ... , #WaterWatch

Increasingly anxious Capetonians break the bank to buy water-related stuff

The Jo-Jo brand has entrenched itself in the psyche of South Africans… We’re seeing tanks being produced left, right and centre… A lot are being shipped to Cape Town… We’re not seeing any price gouging… The tanks are, by far, the most popular item…

Kevin Tucker, Price Check

People are going online to buy bottled water… We’ve seen a 500% increase in search volumes… They’re trying to get their hands on whatever is available.

Our swimming pool has become our private reservoir…

The sale of water and water-related products are skyrocketing; suppliers can hardly keep up.

Consumer spending proves that more and more Capetonians believe “Day Zero” is a “when” not an “if” scenario.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Price Check CEO Kevin Tucker for his weekly “The Science Of” feature.

Price Check - one of South Africa’s leading price comparison websites – has loads of data on what people are buying (Jo-Jo tanks, jerry cans to carry one’s 25 litre daily water allocation, buckets for showering, hand sanitiser, rinse free dish-soap, etc.).

Tucker discussed the following, and more:

  • What the most popular water saving items are that people are buying.

  • Whether prices for water tanks and pumps are spiking, or whether the sheer volume of sales are keeping prices stable.

  • How the average Capetonian is preparing for the shutoff of taps (e.g. mass use of grey water; water storage solutions; etc.)

  • Suggestions for what to buy.

  • Whether or not stockist will keep up with demand, or eventually run out.

People are just paying whatever they can at the moment…

It depends on what your friends use, and whether it worked, or not… People shop on recommendation…

Air-to-water machines are very popular… We never knew they existed before this crisis!

Artificial grass is very popular… I’d rather just put in some pebbles.

…It’s basically a water wheelbarrow… It’s called a ‘Hippo Roller’…

Kevin Tucker, Price Check

There are industries springing up all over the place!

Kevin Tucker, Price Check

We’re seeing a lot of waterless products… Anything you can imagine that doesn’t require any water…

Kevin Tucker, Price Check

Our saving grace is that this is just affecting the Western Cape… We won’t see a shortage of bottled water…
