Is immunity/amnesty for Jacob Zuma on the cards?

Opposition party members John Steenhuisen, chief whip of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Narend Singh, chief whip of the Inkatha Freedom Party both say immunity for President Jacob Zuma is unacceptable.

Singh was adamant that the country can’t be held ransom by Zuma.

We cannot be held in limbo for too long. President Zuma should have his day in court, he has denied all of these charges so let him have his day in court.

Narend Singh, chief whip of the Inkatha Freedom Party

The DA is warning of legal action should Zuma get immunity from prosecution in exchange for stepping down as president.

Francis Antonie, Director of the Helen Suzman Foundation, stressed the fact that no one is above the law.

No one is above the law, we will see what the deal will be struck and we will then see the nature of law.

Both Steenhuisen and Singh said the further postponement of the State of the Nation Address (Sona) is unacceptable.

Monday is the day leaders of opposition must convene if we don’t hear anything by the weekend. We will be pressing for motion of no confidence.

Narend Singh, chief whip of the Inkatha Freedom Party

We can accept an announcement by Sunday so we can start planning Parliament diary. Ramaphosa made a terrible mistake by cancelling the special NEC meeting. We will not tolerate this dragging.
