Former top cop Phahlane to have his day in court for alleged corruption

Former national police commissioner Lieutenant-General Kgomotso Phahlane, his wife Beauty, and a car dealer are expected to appear in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court for corruption and money laundering on Thursday morning.

Phahlane is accused of taking kickbacks in order to secure tenders for police suppliers.

Private forensic investigator Paul O'Sullivan has written to prosecutor Michael Mashuga, accusing him of protecting Phahlane from the wheels of justice.

He says Phahlane and Mashuga were part of a scheme used to capture the justice system.

You have to understand that Phahlane was appointed by Zuma. What Zuma wanted to do was to capture the police. In order to do that he had all these people appointed at high levels.

Paul O'Sullivan, Private forensic investigator

Phahlane was acting chief of police for a very long time and the reason they have all these people on acting positions is that they have better control over them.

Paul O'Sullivan, Private forensic investigator

If you capture the police and the prosecution service, which Zuma did, you can make sure that none of your criminal buddies are going to be prosecuted and that's what happened... Michael Mashuga is part of the clique of people within the prosecution authority that's prepared to do anything he is instructed to do.

Paul O'Sullivan, Private forensic investigator

So I've gone for the jugular and I told Michael Mashuga that I am going to send him to prison.

Paul O'Sullivan, Private forensic investigator

EWN reporter Barry Bateman both Phahlane and his wife received cars from a car dealer, which they claimed were sponsored vehicles.

But later it was discovered by Ipid that the cars constituted gratuities for securing tenders for a police forensics supplier.

It is understood that the implicated car dealer will not be appearing in court on Thursday, says Bateman.
