Laundry piling up? Tips on how to keep clothes fresh and avoid wasteful washing

Is your laundry basket overflowing? A fashion expert and plumbing guru share their tips on how to be water smart.

Cyril Naicker, from Fashion Revolution SA, offered advice on how to reduce loads of laundry and how to pick clothing items that waste less water.

Naicker explains that natural fibres, such as cotton fabrics, can be air-dried and can be reworn for longer than synthetic fabrics.

People need to be informed in terms of how they wash their clothing, buying clothing and the best practices.

Cottons are easy to air-dry and let the sun do the work instead putting it into a wash cycle.

Use natural fibres, use the sniff test and re-use your worn clean clothes at the gym so that it doesn't go straight into the wash.

Lee Goldie, co-founder of Drips Plumbing, says residents should familiarise themselves with their washing machines.

Very often, front-loader and top-loader washers use different quantities of water for different cycles.

Goldie suggests that people spend time reading the washing machine manual to find out which are the most economic cycles on the machine.

He also advises that washing machine water can be collected for grey water purposes.

Try avoid washing machines. If you must use them, go for the most economic cycle you can.

A generously sized bin will do the trick for today's modern washing machines. The water is great for your grey water flush or for your plants, if need be.
