Heywood: R200 000 only one step in compensation for Life Esidimeni families

Executive director of Section 27 Mark Heywood say the monetary compensation which the state has agreed to give the Life Esidimeni families is just one part in this long process.

The families here seek much much more, they seek truth, they seek closure, they seek other steps to be outlined.

Mark Heywood, Section 27

The state reached an agreement in the Life Esidimeni arbitration hearings with the families of the psychiatric patients who died with regards to compensation for common law claims. The families had initially asked for R220 000 under this law but they state will give them R20 000 less.

The families are satisfied in this respect.
