#CTWaterCrisis: Here are a few alternatives to flushing

While Day-Zero has been pushed out to 11 May there is much people can still do to either push it out even further.

Alternative sanitation solutions like effective flushing techniques could help ease the water crisis.

Senior Manager, Freshwater Programmes at WWF-SA, Christine Colvin suggests a few creative and sustainable ways to flushing.

Start thinking about alternate sources of water you can flush with, rain water, maybe your pool is looking pretty green an horrible. You can use that to flush with.

Christine Colvin, Senior Manager, Freshwater Programmes at WWF-SA

Our whole infrastructure has been built based on the assumption that we are going to be using fresh water in it, so it is not built for use in the long term to take sea water, but just in those Atlantic sea board areas, you can use it as an emergency measure.

Christine Colvin, Senior Manager, Freshwater Programmes at WWF-SA

She has advised against defecating in your garden.

If you have got access to a garden, it is actually ok to just pee in your garden as your pets do, but the whole issue of sanitation and access to sanitation is very much one about human dignity. This is already a national crisis and we are going to see exactly what that's like in Cape Town if we get to a day zero scenario.

Christine Colvin, Senior Manager, Freshwater Programmes at WWF-SA

Open defecation is an absolute no no. Pee in your garden with pleasure, but do not drop any solids in your garden. That needs to be kept in a proper dry toilet and handled very safely.
