Joburg Theatre welcomes ‘The Colour Purple’ to its Nelson Mandela stage

'The Color Purple' is a glorious musical that it entertains, and ultimately uplifts audiences to a state of sheer joy. It tells the unforgettable story of a woman who, through love, finds the strength to triumph over adversity and discover her unique voice in the world.

Producer of ‘The Colour Purple’ Bernard Jay chats to #WeekendBreakfast host Phemelo Motene about how the musical ‘The Colour Purple’ made its way to South Africa.

I first had the idea of trying to stage The Colour Purple in South Africa about four years ago so it’s been a long journey but certainly worthwhile.

Jay says that most musicals are controlled by companies located in the United States. He adds that over the years, he managed to developed a relationship with all of them so he knew who to write to.

When I approached them, there was already rumbles about a London Production that was happening says Jay.

My understanding is that everything on this musical has to be passed by Oprah Winfrey’s office because she is a lead producer on the Broadway Musicals.

Jay says that they were told that Oprah wanted ‘The Colour Purple’ to be done in South Africa, and she wanted a South African company of actors to do the production.
