District Six Walk of Remembrance takes place to empower those displaced in 1966

Scores of people are expected to gather at the site for a walk of remembrance to mark 52 years since the forced removals, and after two years of being denied the opportunity to practise their tradition, organisers say the custom of placing stones at the cairn would continue this year.

Spokesperson at District Six Museum Bonita Bennett chats about the memorial walk, and what it means for the people of Cape Town.

Bennett says that the walk happens every year on the 11th February because that is the date District six was declared a white group area in 1966.

The significance of this walk is that although there are many dates that mark the displacement of people from areas like District six, the community has a single date that they think of as the beginning of the end of life as they knew it.

This year’s memorial is about recommitting to campaigns of restitution, and the call to declare District Six a heritage site.
