City must dispense with Day Zero until after winter rainfall, says climate guru

Applied climatologist Dr Peter Johnston says the City of Cape Town should call off 'Day Zero' for the next few months, following positive water-saving results.

Dr Johnston proposes that the City should reevaluate the situation in September, once winter rains have fallen.

He says officials should continue encouraging water saving efforts, but should dispense with the idea of Day Zero for now.

Meanwhile, there are concerns that announcing the changed Day Zero projections will cause residents to slack off on water-saving efforts.

Day Zero is less likely the more it is pushed back into the winter rainfall period, the more likely we'll get some rain.

Dr Peter Johnston, Climate Scientist at UCT

I think dispensing with the idea of Day Zero for the next three of for months is a good idea.

Dr Peter Johnston, Climate Scientist at UCT

I'm not saying that we must dispense with the concept of saving water.
