The South African rand rallied in anticipation of President Cyril Ramaphosa maiden State of the Nation Address.
It is currently trading at R11.61 to the dollar, close to a three-year high.
Ramaphosa placed the economy and unemployment at the centre of his speech.
He promised to fix mining and provide policy certainty, fight corruption and speed up land restitution in a manner that will boost agricultural production.
Ramaphosa said Government will change how boards are appointed to state-owned companies, and that non-executive directors would be prevented from taking any part in procurement.
