Sars: 'We welcome the presidential inquiry to restore our credibility'

The South African Revenue Service (Sars) says it welcomes President Cyril Ramaphosa’s pledge to launch a Commission of Inquiry into tax administration and governance at the entity.

During his State of the Nation Address on Friday, Ramaphosa announced a number of new measures including a commission of inquiry into tax administration and governance at Sars.

He said the commission, requested by the finance minister, would ensure that the credibility of Sars is restored.

Sars spokesperson Sandile Memela says they will give their fullest cooperation.

What one would wish to assert is that we will of course be looking forward to the terms of reference for us to be able to know what we are looking at. Our staff are committed people who are always implementing their role to make this organisation efficient, effective authority in terms of revenue collection.

Sandile Memela, SARS spokesperson

The entity has been riddled with claims of corruption after senior Sars official, Jonas Makwakwa became the focus of a criminal investigation by the Hawks relating to the suspicious transactions in his and fellow Sars employee Kelly-Ann Elski's accounts, flagged by the Financial Intelligence Centre last year.

Makwakwa returned to work last month after more than a year off.

If there is anything untoward that has been done in the reinstatement of Mr Jonas Makwakwa and we are found to be so, the commissioner has made a deceleration and a pledge that he will not hesitate to show him the door.
