With the SONA debate focusing more on policies and the future of South Africans, Bongani Bingwa shares the view that South Africans are engaged in the process of rebuilding confidence in public institutions and indeed their futures.

One of the things the administration of Cyril Ramaphosa is going to have to guard against, is the idea that calls can be made at the highest levels and influence exerted on the rich and powerful - read WMC - and different decisions are made because they trust him. Suddenly we are talking about ideas again. Is a sovereign debt fund the best thing for us to pursue? Isn't that a luxury normally for countries with surpluses? Aren't we a long way off from that given how Zuma's misadventures wrecked the economy in terms of lost opportunities? The fourth industrial revolution? Minimum wage? Expropriation? National Health Insurance? Will the President's initiatives drive the growth and create the jobs we so badly need?
