[LISTEN] Blade Nzimande says he is available to serve in Cabinet again

SACP leader Dr Blade Nzimande in conversation with Eusebius McKaiser said he is available to serve in Cabinet under the new President.

Nzimande was axed as Higher Education Minister by former president Jacob Zuma.

He told Eusebius he is not expecting anything.

But I am available for any deployment.

Blade Nzimande, SACP General Secretary

He says if the SACP agrees, he will go wherever he is asked, whether it be to serve as an ambassador or a minister.

Would it be awkward for him to go back the Higher Education Department, asks Eusebius? But Nzimande would not be drawn on that question.

Let me not answer that.

Blade Nzimande, SACP General Secretary

Nzimande says at the time, the SACP supported the ascendancy of President Jacob Zuma because they were unhappy about the direction of the economic policies under Thabo Mbeki.

he says there were some achievements made during the presidency of Jacob Zuma.

When I was Minister of Higher Education, without the support of President Zuma, we would not have managed to increase the National Students Financial Aid Scheme.

Dr Blade Nzimande, SACP General Secretary

When I came in 2009 it was very low. Hundreds of millions, but by the time I left it was around R9 billion.

Dr Blade Nzimande, SACP General Secretary

Nzimande spoke to McKaiser about some of the issues they faced within the tripartite alliance with the ANC at the helm.

What we did not realise early enough, especially after the Mangaung Conference in 2012, was the beginning of an emergence of what we call in the Communist Party, 'a parallel state'.

Dr Blade Nzimande, SACP General Secretary

In other words, key decisions of the state being taken outside of the state by forces and processes that included people who had nothing to do with government.

Dr Blade Nzimande, SACP General Secretary

We also discovered there was a rogue intelligence unit which collected any information on just anybody who was either seen as a threat or could actually be a threat in future.
