Samwu says municipalities need bigger cut of national budget

Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba is expected to deliver his Budget Speech on Wednesday and explain how Treasury will cover the R50 billion deficit.

There are concerns that municipal workers will suffer over the government's R50 billion shortfall.

The SA Municipal Workers Union's (Samwu) says local municipalities need a bugger cut of the national budget.

Samwu's Simon Mathe says it is not possible for municipalities to deliver effective and efficient services with less than 9% of government spend.

We do not expect Treasury to increase VAT or income tax to fund the deficit.
