'Cape aquifer drilling will have negative impact on rare fynbos'

Associate professor in the Dept of Biological Sciences at UCT Adam West is one of a group of environmental scientists who have raised concerns about the drilling for water in the Table Mountain Aquifer, specifically in the vicinity of the Steenbras Dam.

The area is a nature reserve is part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve and home to a large number of rare and endemic species of indigenous flora.

It probably represents one of the most sensitive places to develop in the world. South Africa has a lot of rare and endangered plants, and probably the highest density of those occur in the Western Cape in our Fynbos Biome.

Adam West, Associate professor in the Dept of Biological Sciences at UCT

He says plans to drill for groundwater are targeted right in this area.

It should create concern and we should proceed with due caution if we are looking to exploit a resource in that area. And we are concerned that's not being done at the moment.

Adam West, Associate professor in the Dept of Biological Sciences at UCT

It is not just about Steenbras, but a large concerted plan for water extraction from the Table Mountain Aquifer as a whole will have a big impact, he explains.

He says there is a need to develop alternative water sources but wants guidelines to be followed.

Take a listen to Adam West's argument:
