CT's central line service resumes following 6 week suspension

Acting Group CEO of Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), Cromet Molepo has confirmed that a limited service has been restored on Cape Town's central line following a six week suspension.

Services were suspended after a security official was shot and killed at Chris Hani station in Makhaza, Khayelitsha.

The incident led to a number of employees refusing to work on the line, citing concerns over safety.

I am committed, with my team, to do everything possible to improve the service going forward because this is the reason for our existence.

Cromet Molepo, Prasa acting CEO

Molepo says Prasa has been in communication with Transnet to bring in extra coaches on the central line and says safety is a priority.

We are appealing to the community that they mustn't allow anybody to interfere with their lives and attack the infrastructure.

Molepo says the Saps has agreed to help out with the security on the line and about 60 officers have been brought in to secure the infrastructure.

EWN reporter Graig-Lee Smith was at Kapteinsklip station in Mitchells Plain on Wednesday morning and says there were between 10 and 15 security guards at the station.

He also told Kieno Kammies that it seemed as if commuters weren't aware the central line had reopened.

People didn't even bother to go to the platform, either opting for a Golden Arrow bus or a MyCiti bus. A vendor told me that usually between 4am and 7am, hundreds of people are at the platform. But it's like a ghost town here.
