#NSFASStrike: 'We have been raising these demands for 8 months' - Nehawu

National Education Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) says it has reached a deadlock with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas), resulting in this week's strike by more than 200 workers.

Employees are protesting about low salary levels and absorption of contract workers to be permanent, among a list of issues.

The strike started on Tuesday.

National Spokesperson of Nehawu, Khaya Xaba says they have been in negotiations with Nsfas management for nearly eight months.

We have been raising these demands for the past 8 months.

Khaya Xaba, National Spokesperson of Nehawu

The decision to strike at this current moment is by pure coincidence, not by design. It was a very painful for us to take this decision. Going at strike at this current moment will lead to students from poor backgrounds especially, suffering because they still need to apply for funding.

Khaya Xaba, National Spokesperson of Nehawu
