What does the law say about the use of drones?

A new handbook's been released detailing the rules and regulations surrounding the use of drones.

The South African Drone Law Handbook explains how, when and where commercial flyers and amateurs can fly drones in South Africa,

Speaking to the Kieno Kammies Show, Eitan Stern, founder and director of website Legalese explains which laws apply to which type of user.

For as long as people have been allowed to fly there have been laws which have said how they are allowed to do so. The only distinction here is that it is just laws that govern a new type of aircraft that's in the sky.

Eitan Stern, Founder/Director, Legalese

The distinction is whether you are making money out of it. So if you're making money and doing it professionally then you're going to need a specific type of license.

Eitan Stern, Founder/Director, Legalese

Stern says, while drone laws may seem restrictive, they must be viewed in the context in which they apply.

All that's happened now is that drones have entered [the market] and anyone can down to the store and enter the air space. So the laws aren't unfair, they just have to be applied properly.

Eitan Stern, Founder/Director, Legalese
