[LISTEN] It takes time to heal from trauma- clinical psychologist

Clinical psychologist Khosi Jiyane says trauma is like an earth quake where it shakes the fundamentals of life.

Speaking to Africa Melane, standing in for Eusebius McKaiser, Jiyane says trauma transforms our sense of being and way of life.

Jiyane says it is an empathetic support of expression to say "it's okay" to someone who just went through a traumatic experience.

What defines trauma is the scale at which it happens, the depth and the magnitude.

Khosi Jiyane, Clinical Psychologist

Such traumatic experiences meet, encounter or rapture an already existing sense of self which is unique to each and everyone of us; because we are the accumulation genetics, biological genetics and social genetics.

Khosi Jiyane, Clinical Psychologist

Because each one of us is unique, the impact that each one of us will have will be unique even though we experience a universal experience.

Khosi Jiyane, Clinical Psychologist

Jiyane says the recovery process is a journey. She says it is normal to feel like you are going back and forth in your healing process.

The process of piecing ourselves together takes different forms.

Khosi Jiyane, Clinical Psychologist

The important thing is the recognise that there has been intrusion into your sense of self and therefore is will take time for healing to happen.
