Africa Check: Govt promise of four million jobs were not permanent

In June 2009, then president Jacob Zuma said government will create over four million jobs over a 5 year period.

Senior researcher at Africa Check, Kate Wilkinson, says the expanded public works programe did indeed create four million jobs.

When politicians and presidents talk about job opportunities and work opportunities, there are few things to remember; first of all these are not permanent jobs; they only last a few months.

Kate Wilkinson, Senior researcher at Africa Check

It is a programe to get people opportunities to get work experience with the aim of them using that to get permanent jobs.

Kate Wilkinson, Senior researcher at Africa Check

Wilkinson says the EPW project does not measure the number of people who got jobs but how may jobs were created. She says while four million jobs were created, we can't say four million people got the jobs.

The president did keep his word, four million jobs were created in 5 years but they were not permanent and it's probably not four million people who benefited.
