SACP wants VAT increase to be reversed - report

The South African Communist Party (SACP) has warned that an increase in VAT may have implications for the African National Congress (ANC).

Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba announced the one percentage point hike in his Budget speech last week.

The move has been highly cirticised by opposition parties and labour organizations.

The SACP says it will push to have the decision reversed.

Eyewitness News reporter Clement Manyathela has more on the story.

They are unhappy about it. Just like the NEC called for government to consider other measures, so that you alleviate the pressure on the poor as a result of this VAT increase, they are also calling in government to do that.

Clement Manyathela, EWN political reporter

In fact they are saying that they are going to campaign very hard and push for government to reverse this decision come the medium-term budget.
