"Restaurants are obligated to provide you with tap water" - Fedhasa

Due to the drought, many restaurants in Cape Town are insisting patrons pay for still or sparking water rather than providing them with free tap water.

According to Section 4.7 of the Liquor Act, this is illegal, as restaurants who have liquor licences must provide free drinking water.

Jeff Rosenberg, Fedhasa Cape Chairperson says this law is still in effect, even with the water crisis.

Nothing has changed really and I think that there is a lot that needs to be done to save water in the current situation - but this is not one of them.

Rosenberg says there are many other ways restaurants can save water, including removing linen table cloths and napkins that require washing or filling ice buckets to the brim.
