Was land stolen? Is uncompensated expropriation the answer? EFF, DA, Cope debate

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) will open and close debate in the National Assembly this afternoon on the expropriation of land without compensation.

EFF leader Julius Malema tabled motion calling for changes to Section 25 of the Constitution, known as the property rights clause.

The EFF wants all land to be owned by the state and proposes that a multi-party committee be set up to review and implement the constitutional amendment.

Meanwhile, other political parties have differing views on the land expropriation and the history of land theft.

Where do political parties stand on land?

EFF MP Nazir Paulsen explains that land expropriation without compensation is the only moral solution to addressing the apartheid land dispossession.

The government will never have enough money to purchase back land that was taken from our people.

Nazir Paulsen, EFF MP

You don't go and buy something that was stolen from you.

Nazir Paulsen, EFF MP

Parliament is the only institution that can address the Constitution. The parliamentary process is important and we respect the Constitution.

Congress of the People (Cope) leader Mosiuoa Lekota disputes claims that land was stolen by colonial settlers.

Lekota says land expropriation without compensation fails to accurately address South Africa's history.

We must correct the fallacy that our land was stolen.

Mosiuoa Lekota, leader of Cope

It was a commercial agreement signed between the Dutch East India Company (or VOC) and a Khokhoi leader.

Democratic Alliance (DA) chief whip John Steenhuisen says land reform is needed to address the history of dispossession.

However, Steenhuisen argues that changing Section 25 of the Constitution misdiagnoses the challenges of land reform.

To deny that there was mass dispossession of black South Africans of land through colonialism and various acts, is dishonest.

John Steenhuisen, DA's Chief Whip in Parliament

We have to meaningfully redress this painful legacy if we're going to build a new prosperous South Africa.

John Steenhuisen, DA's Chief Whip in Parliament

We should be focusing on solutions to resolve dispossession.

John Steenhuisen, DA's Chief Whip in Parliament

The way in which the EFF and now the ANC have gone with land expropriation without compensation has misdiagnosed where the problem lies.

John Steenhuisen, DA's Chief Whip in Parliament

We need to look at the ANC's commitment to land reform. In the last financial year, the ANC spent 0.2% of national expenditure of land reform. That's the lowest its been since 1994.

John Steenhuisen, DA's Chief Whip in Parliament

We're not putting our money where our mouth is and we don't have a proper legislative framework. Why does this ANC government not trust black people with land? Why are we not handing out title deeds?

John Steenhuisen, DA's Chief Whip in Parliament

There's no need to tinker with the Constitution. It comes to implementation and legislation.
