Tourism Minister speaks of 'new mood of optimism' under Ramaphosa

South Africa's new Minister of Tourism has spoken of his excitement at returning to cabinet.

To serve under a person of the calibre of Cyril Ramaphosa is amazingly exciting and I think there’s just a new mood of enthusiasm in the air and I think it’s great to be part of it.

Derek Hanekom, Minister of Tourism

Hanekom returns to the position of Minister of Tourism after being replaced by Tokozile Xasa in March last year. He has previously held various positions in cabinet.

I started off Minister of Land Affairs, then I went on to science and technology, and from there I went on to tourism and the commencement of this term. It's a wonderful portfolio.

Derek Hanekom, Minister of Tourism

The minister says the biggest challenges facing the department are marketing and making it easier for visitors to travel to South Africa.

Many countries trying to make it easier for visitors to come to their country have done it by relaxing their visa requirements.

Derek Hanekom, Minister of Tourism

Hanekom says he will be working in partnership with reinstated Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, to boost visitor numbers.

Right now, we have the infrastructure, we just have to get the numbers.
