What's the best way to tell your kids about sex?

Don't wait for your children to approach you before you talk to them about sex.

That's the advice from one educational psychologist who spoke to 702's Azania Mosaka Show on Tuesday.

Claudia Abelheim, from The Family Life Centre, says waiting for our children to go through puberty, before talking to them about sex, is too late.

For me it can't start early enough, but it just depends on where you start. Obviously what you're going to talk to your 13 year old about, isn't what you're going to talk to your five year old about.

Claudia Abelheim, Educational Psychologist, The Family Life Centre

Abelheim says parents need to make sure that their kids know they can talk to them about sex without feeling it's a taboo subject.

To know that they can talk to their parents about it, who are they support system, can be incredibly encouraging for children.

Listener Mbali called in to say she's unsure how to explain to her 6 year old daughter what it means when her partner spends the night.

She sometimes asks me afterwards, 'how was the sleepover?', and I literally clam up and I'm so embarrassed.

Mbali, 702 listener

Abelheim says the best way to deal with questions about sex from our children is to be upfront and honest.

One of my biggest tips to parents is to just answer what they're asking you. For example if they ask, 'why is so-and-so sleeping over?', you say 'because he is Mommy's new friend.'
