The Science Of ...

South Africa is the 71st (out of 180) most corrupt country in the world

We’re busy [with a case] in Durban where a meat buyer for one of the retailers has generated R70 million for himself by adding an extra R1 or R2 per kilo to the price of meat that he was ordering… He’s built up about 15 properties, a nice Ferrari, some offshore apartments… The fraud ran for approximately four years.

… She became the voluntary treasurer of the church… but she was actually laundering money… what led to her being caught out, was that she was a compulsive gambler… When we confronted her, she confessed… Unfortunately, while she was out on bail she committed another fraud… Of the R2 million she stole, R1.950 million went to the local casino!

Steven Powell, ENS Africa

South Africa is the 71st (out of 180) most corrupt country in the world, according to Transparency International.

This is considerably worse than its neighbours Botswana (34th) and Namibia (53rd).

South Africa’s corruption score has been deteriorating for a number of years.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed ENS Africa Director in Forensics Steven Powell about the science of South Africa’s corruption status.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

Steven Powell, ENS Africa

There are sweeping changes at the NPA that are imminent… I’m very optimistic… there are individuals up to mischief that are very nervous…

Steven Powell, ENS Africa

What we do in forensics is we follow the money trail…

Steven Powell, ENS Africa

We encourage the individual to work with us… In about 80% of the matters we get them to work with us… We usually know at an early stage… whether they are going to cooperate… the first thing they often say is ‘my wife knows nothing about this’...
