Blacksash's Hoodah Abrahams-Fayker says the new Social Development Minister is being thrown into the deep end with the Sassa debacle.

According to a panel of experts, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has not provided any evidence that it has audited its existing cash pay points, raising concern over the payments of of grants.

The panel led by Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu says it appears Sassa is not viewing this as a priority.

Around 2.9 million beneficiaries are meant to receive cash payouts under a new service provider, as of 1st April.

Attorney at Women's Legal Centre and Black Sash National Advocacy Manager, Hoodah Abrahams-Fayker says there appears to be no effective plan in place.

There was supposed to be an effective plan in place for social grants to be paid from the 1st of April 2018 and now Sassa has applied for an extension for the current service provider for an extra six months.

There is definitely a reason to be concerned because in terms of the application, there is no clarity as to why there is a further delay, what are the steps in place. There is nothing effective which would make grant beneficiaries comfortable to ensure that they will receive their social grans come 1st of April, uninterrupted.

She says the new Social Development Minister Susan Shanbangu is being thrown into the deep end.

I think she is getting a bit of an unfair deal because she is being thrown into the social grants debacle which has been created by her predecessor.
