Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi explains how they eventually tracked it down.

In January, nine children in Soweto started suffering stomach ache, vomiting and developing fever. They were rushed to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where their blood was tested and it was found they had listeriosis.

Aaron Motsoaledi, Health Minister

The current outbreak has been caused by a strain of listeria known as ST6.

They found that they were fed with sandwiches made with polony made by Enterprise and chicken sausage from Rainbow. The food was tested and found to contain listeria ST6

Motsoaledi says environmental samples taken from the Enterprise factory in Polokwane tested positive for listeriosis.

We are recalling products from both Enterprise and from Rainbow while we are waiting for the sequencing results from Rainbow.

Aaron Motsoaledi, Health Minister

The minister has the following advice for those who have purchased the affected products.

Remove them from the fridge, put them in a bag somewhere if you are wanting a refund, and wait for the recall process. Then, clean the fridge with warm water and mild bleach.
