'What's the hold up?' - MPs question Estina state capture arrest delays

Co-Chairperson of the ANC Study Group on Justice and Correctional Services and Police Dr Mathole Motshekga says the NPA and Hawks have given their assurance that they are not at loggerheads over the Estina Dairy Farm case.

National Prosecuting Authority boss Shaun Abrahams and Hawks head Lt-Gen Yolisa Matakata appeared before a joint sitting of the Police and Justice Committees on Wednesday.

Matakata had accused the NPA of delaying arrests in the Estina state capture case.

She says the Hawks submitted their docket in November last year, but arrests were only made in February 2018.

They assured us that they are not at logger heads. The NPA made a submission which the head of the Hawks had not seen which was interpreted as throwing the head of the NPA under the bus.

Dr Motshekga says they were concerned about the slow progress of prosecutions on the Estina state capture matter. He says members of the committee felt that there was selective prosecution and that was unacceptable.

The main concern was that the project was driven by the politicians, but the people that were arrested were only the state officials. The members felt that was a selective prosecution.

The members felt that there were not risk measures taken and it appeared as if people were assisted to flee the country.

Addressing the Minister of Home Affairs' absence in Parliament yesterday - to answer questions over the Gupta citizenship - Dr Motshekga suggests not everybody takes it seriously.

Maybe ourselves, as Parliament, in the past put sweetheart questions because we worked on the assumption that everybody takes us seriously, but it appears that's not necessarily the case.
