There is a contingency plan in place to make sure grants are paid - Sassa

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) says a contingency plan is in place to ensure that grants are paid out on 1 April.

A decision is yet to be taken by the Constitutional Court after the agency asked that the court to suspend the ruling finding its contract with service provider Cash Paymaster Service (CPS) was invalid, for another six months.

While the South African Post Office (Sapo) is ready to distribute payments to beneficiaries, Sassa says it still needs support to pay 2.8 million social grant beneficiaries in cash.

Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi insists there is progress in making sure that all beneficiaries receive their grant money.

The intention is to make sure that we have this particular extension but there is a contingency plan to make sure in case there is a decision taken by the Con Court.

We must start identifying post offices which exist in those particular pay points so that if a decision is taken which does not agree with the extension of the six months, people can start getting their pay from the post offices.

We definitely have a plan to make sure poor people get paid on the 1st of April.
