'We must work together to save Optimum coal mine' - Gwede Mantashe

Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe says he is engaged various stakeholders to determine a way forward following disruptions at the Optimum coal mine in Mpumalanga.

Mantashe visited the troubled mine on Thursday.

The company has been placed on business rescue, along with other Gupta-owned businesses.

Mantashe says workers who demonstrated last month have been paid, and that the mine is now operational.

The starting point is what is the objective? The objective is that, here is a mine in distress, if we want to save it we must all work together to get it out of the mud and save it.

Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources

We have spoken to the workers, management, the portfolio committee, business rescue practitioners, we are talking to everybody who matters.

Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources

When I talked to the business rescue practitioners and said can we talk to the shareholders, they said the shareholders have disappeared. But at least they are generating money, they have paid teh workers, they have paid the creditors, the mines are operational. All four of them.

Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources

The issue is that in the long term how do you rescue them? Good deposits , good mines, they can be very profitable but they must be managed properly.
