JMPD civilian oversight committee to be established soon

Johannesburg Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety Councillor Micheal Son said according to Section 64 J of the South African Police Services Act, under the legislation that creates the metro police, there is a requirement for a civilian oversight and that group of people who are not police officers get to exercise that oversight.

This comes after a caller posed this question on Thursday. Speaking to Stephen Grootes, Son said the establishment of the committee doesn't fall within the department of the public safety department, however the execution of the administrative function falls within the office of the city manager.

The notice will be published very soon inviting all interested parties to become a member of the oversight committee.
