Why Cape Town's Day Zero was postponed

In an announcement made by Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane on Wednesday that says the Western Cape will not realise Day Zero in 2018, on condition Capetonians continue being responsible with their water usage.

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille, in her piece on the Daily Maverick, titled: "On the inside, four changes that rewrote the Day Zero narrative, attributes four things contributing to the narrative changing.

She writes, those things as being, water consumption dropping, three agricultural irrigations boards being cut entirely, farmers of the Groenland Water Users Association donating 10 billion liters of water from one of their dams to the city and the fourth being augmentation beginning to come on stream by the targeted date.

Speaking to Africa Melane on the Eusebius McKaiser Show, Dr Kevin Winter, from UCT’s Future Water Institute says according to their data, all those four reasons have come into play already, and they have seen them in terms of the models they work with. However, there is still a threat and he advises people to continue to use water wisely.

Every month that goes by, we are loosing 2% so if we look over the next three months, we are going to lose in terms of our water usage from our dams, 8% less water.

Dr Kevin Winter, UCT’s Future Water Institute
