Panyaza Lesufi speaks: Teachers in charge of classrooms, there is no democracy

A video has gone viral showing a school pupil at Hoerskool Drie Riviere in Vereeniging throwing what appears to be an exercise book at a teacher in the classroom.

The video shows her moving from her desk, with a pile of papers, walking up an aisle up to the teacher's desk, where the teacher appears to be holding her phone. The pupil then pelts the teacher with papers, turns and walks away, much to the amusement of the other pupils in the classroom.

The incident led to Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi visiting the school on Monday to try and rectify the matter.

Speaking to Azania Mosaka Lesufi says his message to the school was that teachers need to be in charge of the classroom, there is no democracy in the classroom, he adds. He said the pupil's parent has also accepted that what the child did was wrong.

That child needs assistance, as schools are learning centers, we need to mold the child at a young age. If we can't mold the child at that age, we will find difficulties to mold the child at a later stage.
